The 1st Durham Young Scholars Professional Development Workshop (Operations and Analytics Sector)

Durham University Business School (Waterside Building)
25-26 June 2025

Situated in a UNESCO World Heritage site, Durham is one of the UK’s most historic universities. Its Business School has recently moved to a new centrally located building with room and facility for the 2025 MSOM satellite conference. The University’s Event Durham team regularly manages conferences of a similar size.  Durham University Operations Management Groups have grown significantly in recent years. We have facilities, support, and a team ready and welcome to support 2025 MSOM satellite conference to come to Durham!

Aim: The aim of this site conference is to help the young scholars improve their research skills. We plan to have discussion panels with the journal editors who would comment on the young scholar’s research and answer questions from the general review process.

Impact: Organizing a site conference in Durham, as a complement to the main MSOM conference in London, enhances the overall impact of the event by providing additional opportunities for young scholars to refine their research skills. This supplementary conference allows for more personalized interactions with journal editors and detailed feedback on their work. It creates a supportive environment for in-depth discussions and learning, which may be less feasible in the larger, more hectic main conference. By expanding the geographical reach and offering a more intimate setting, the Durham site conference ensures broader participation and fosters a stronger, more connected academic community within the field of management science and operations management.

Local Organizing Committee (Neil Walton, Riccardo Mogre, Fang Liu, Yanlu Zhao, Gar Goei Loke, Chang Dong): The committee has broad experience in organizing similar events: chairing Newton Institute programs, the APS track at INFORMS, POM Hong Kong conference, Natcor PhD advisory board, as well as a host of other meetings, workshops, conference, symposia. There is significant local administrative experience with Event Durham. The team also regularly organize a series of seminars inviting external and internal speakers. The local organizing committee also has a good number of postgraduate students as supporting volunteers.
